This kit is the
Hasegawa F-86F-40 that I converted to an F-86E. The main conversions were shortening the wings, filling in the
slats, adding the wing fences, and converting the extra fuel tanks to make the combat version. The conversions were basically simple and didn't require much work. I cut the wing-tips off with a modeling saw, then
I cut the back of the wing-tip off where the aileron meets the wing-tip. You have to do this because the aileron on the E model extended all the way to the end of the wing-tip. I then removed about a 1/2 in. of plastic where the slat meets the first panel line near the wing-tip. This will make the wing the right length when you re-apply the wing-tip To convert the fuel tanks you can simply add plastic to the rear fins so that they look like a complete triangle, or simply just make a whole new fin assembly from sheet styrene, I chose the later method. A lot less sanding that way. Other conversions were a scratch-built seat and instrument panel.
I chose to model A 51st Fighter Interceptor Group F-86 flown by Capt. Hal Fischer. He was shot down after claiming his eleventh and final victory and became a P.O.W. for the remainder of the Korean War.
