Major John Glenn's "MIG MAD MARINE"

This is the Academy F-86-30 Sabre in 1/48 scale built straight out of the box, with the exception of seatbelts from Reheat and decals from an old Superscale sheet.

The kit goes together beautifully, with very little filler required. The most challenging aspect was filling the large open area at the bottom of the intake duct/top of the nose gear bay, part D26.

The model is finished in SNJ Spray Aluminum, with a few panels polished with SNJ aluminum powder. The steel gun panels were polished with a little graphite from a 2H pencil. The yellow and black stripes were from the kit decal sheet. I then gave the model a light coat of Floquil Flat varnish to impart an oxidized look.

Panel lines and weathering were accomplished with a wash of ground pastel chalks in soapy water (see article in the "Tools 'n' Tips" section).

This is an excellent model of a very important aircraft. The model was a joy to build, with little stress and bother. I have not yet built the Hasegawa offering, so I cannot compare them.
