I drew on all the so-called "Zebra" stripes, number 49, the civil number, and the name "HI TIME - II."  I taped on tracing paper over all the stripes.   I would use these tracings later, to lay on top of my black "Super-Scale" decal film.  I traced over the logo, #49, and N 335J.  I drew professional drawings of the latter items, which were sent off to Chris.
The fuselage was sanded down to 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper.  This model was going to have a high-gloss automotive lacquer finish.  This was my first try at "lacquer !"  The last operation is::: "I always apply a very thin layer of paint on my models, and begin to sand it off.  This method shows all the flaws in your model, which should be fixed prior to painting."

Ron Eminger, who lived in Cleveland, Ohio makes all his own colors, using the auto-lacquer.  I was in Cleveland in 1987 and saw some of his racers, and "WOW" what paint job's he had on his models.  This was for me, so he gave me written instruction on "how-to" use the lacquer on plastic.

The original Mustang, so said the information, had all the panel line's sealed over, and had a high gloss finish.  I filled all the panel lines and had a super finish on the model.  It's now painting time.

I started out using the lacquer, but some of the panel line started popping up.  I called Ron, and he said this happens to some Hasegawa kit's.  He suggested to use another enamle-base paint, which I did.

I wrote a story of the painting process of the high gloss paint job on this model, which was published in FineScale Modeler magazine; ( July,1991 ).

I tried spraying on the #49, N 335J, and "Hi Time-II;" on a spare Mustang kit, but they did not turn out very good.  I called my modeling friend Chris Hewett, who makes his own decals.  Chris' wife called and said;  "Rodney, do you know that the "hearts" in Hi Time-II logo are "RED?"  I said no, but please put them in "red" if you can; (she did !). For a mere $125.00 or so, Chris supplied me the decals.

Using the pre-drawn "Zebra" stripe patterns, I cut out and applied all the black decal film "Zebra" stripes, including two round red decals for the wing gas caps. They went on like a "tailor-made suit."  I most likely sprayed on some future before I attached the decals Chris made!
